Personality:
Much of Athos’ troubled personality has been influenced by tragic events. Upon discovering his wife had murdered his brother, he personally sentenced her to death. Unable to stray from his code of honour and lawfulness, he had to make an example of her crimes. This tore him apart, and he fled to Paris, abandoning his family and his duties. But no matter how he ran, this tragedy still weighs heavily on his shoulders, leaving him plagued by nightmares and memories. Withdrawn and solemn, Athos struggles to carry this guilt, and relies heavily on drink, often to the state of passing out. Only the alcohol and adventure offer any sense of release from his demons.

It doesn’t go unnoticed by others, causing Athos to be referred to as ‘moody’ and ‘melancholy’. He carries his secret with him, and only ever reveals the truth when he’s forced to. In spite of his troubles, Athos has displayed many strengths during his time with the Musketeers. He manages to keep a level head in most situations, and this, along with his bravery and intelligence makes him a natural leader of the group. His friendships prove Athos can form a strong bond despite of his emotional hardships, and he is in fact very dependent on his fellow Musketeers. He is loyal and protective of his friends, even if it puts him at risk and goes against his duty. He also has a dry sense of humour, often providing sarcastic and witty repartee even in unsuitable situations, with a quick thinking ability that favours him both on and off the battlefield. He is proud to be a Musketeer, having found a family among men, and is known as the best swordsman in the regiment. He’s respected enough to be considered second to Captain Treville – so much so that he is ultimately made Captain of the Musketeers himself.

Formerly the Comte de la Fere, Athos has long since shunned his noble title, but like much of his past, it’s kept secret from his friends. But traces of his nobility remain, in that he is well educated, honourable, and at times, little arrogant. Unlike his fellow Musketeers, who are often eager to rush in hot headed, he holds himself back in most situations, reserved and thoughtful – preferring to consider all options and ensure the right decision is made. No doubt this has spanned from his regret for rashly condemning his wife.

It also holds him back from pursuing any other women, preferring to not get entangled in romance like his friends often do. He rarely mentions he was once married, and clearly has no desire to do so again, disinterested in love, and left hollow by the death of his wife. The only time he’s shown interest in a women is when she initiates the flirtation, and though he is receptive to being kissed, it’s notable that Athos never openly declares any requited feelings. It is only when he finds out his wife has escaped her hanging, that another side to Athos is revealed, in the contradicting form of rage and desire. Milady de Winter is one of the few people who can uproot this stoic and aloof nature of Athos, who is otherwise keen to keep his emotions under wraps.

In Teleios, this quiet and thoughtful front is one that most others will see, even in the face of his apparent kidnap. He will not act rashly, and will be a calming influence, particularly amongst his friends. The demons of his past will still haunt him, in light of recently missing out on a reconciliation with his wife. This lost opportunity will weigh on him, only adding to his withdrawn nature. However, as ever, alcohol and adventure are his vices, and will be frequently sought in Teleios as he tries to come to terms with the new direction his life has taken, and the lack of responsibility as Captain of the Musketeers.
